My Approach

Values

The principles that guide how I work with every person I support.

Inclusion for All

I believe everyone deserves access to high-quality psychological support. I enjoy thinking creatively and adapting my approach to meet individual needs, ensuring support is accessible, meaningful and person-centred. This includes experience using assistive technology to help people engage in their care.

Collaboration

Working together is at the heart of my approach. Shared decision-making is important to me, with people actively involved in setting their own goals and shaping the support they receive. My role is not to tell people what to do, but to work alongside them so they feel understood, empowered and able to move forward.

Cultural Responsiveness

I recognise that faith, culture, family and personal beliefs can have a significant influence on how we understand ourselves, cope with difficulties and find meaning. Coming from a faith background, I appreciate the importance these values can hold, while welcoming people from all faiths, cultures and beliefs. Therapy should never ask someone to leave an important part of their identity at the door. Instead, I aim to provide culturally sensitive psychological support that respects each person's values and works alongside what is important to them.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I bring my faith, culture or personal values into our conversations?+

Absolutely. Who you are matters. Your faith, culture, family, identity, sexuality, relationships and life experiences all influence how you see the world. Rather than asking you to leave those parts of yourself at the door, I want to understand them. Whether faith is a source of strength, a place of uncertainty or simply not something that's important to you, we'll work in a way that respects your values rather than making assumptions about them.

I come from a background where people don't really talk about mental health.+

You're certainly not the only one. Many people have grown up believing they should just get on with things, keep problems within the family or avoid burdening other people. Sometimes asking for support can feel uncomfortable because it's unfamiliar rather than because it's wrong.

Will what I say stay confidential?+

Absolutely. Confidentiality is something I take seriously because trust has to come first. What you choose to share stays between us unless I become concerned that there is a serious risk to your safety or somebody else's, or where the law requires me to act. If that situation ever arose, I would always aim to be open with you about what was happening and why. I don't believe in surprises when it comes to trust.

What if we don't click?+

The relationship matters. If I don't think I'm the right person to support you, I'll tell you honestly. Equally, if you don't feel we're the right fit, that's completely okay. Finding someone you feel comfortable with is far more important than trying to make something work because you've already booked a session.

I'm not sure if I need support.+

You don't have to arrive with a diagnosis or even know exactly what you're looking for. Sometimes people contact me because anxiety is getting in the way. Others are feeling overwhelmed, stuck in the same patterns or simply not like themselves. If you're wondering whether talking to someone might help, it's usually worth having that conversation. We can work that out together.

Should I choose online or in-person sessions?+

Both can be equally effective, and there's no right or wrong choice. Some people value having a dedicated space away from home where they can fully switch off and focus on themselves. Others feel more comfortable talking from the familiarity of their own surroundings. We'll discuss what suits you, your lifestyle and what you're hoping to gain from our work together. If your circumstances change, you're not tied to one format and we can review this as we go.

Consultation for Professional Services

What is psychological consultancy?+

Psychological consultancy is about understanding people before trying to change behaviour. Rather than focusing only on what is happening, we work with organisations to understand why difficulties have developed and what is likely to create meaningful, lasting change. Every recommendation is practical, evidence informed and tailored to your service.

Who do you work with?+

We work with residential children's homes, supported living services, schools, charities, NHS teams and other organisations looking to develop psychologically informed practice. Whether you need support with an individual, a team or your wider service, we'll work with you to find the most appropriate approach.

Do you only work with children?+

No. Although much of our work is with children and young people, we also support adults, staff teams and organisations. Our focus is helping the people around an individual understand them more effectively, creating positive change across the whole system.

Can consultancy be delivered online?+

Yes. Many of our consultations, reflective practice sessions, formulation meetings, supervision and training are delivered online. This allows organisations across the UK to access support without compromising on quality or collaboration. Face to face support is also available where appropriate.

What makes APW different?+

We don't believe there is a one size fits all approach. Every individual, team and organisation has its own strengths, challenges and experiences. We take time to understand your service before making recommendations, ensuring that any support is realistic, meaningful and something your team can confidently put into practice.

Do you tell us what to do?+

We work alongside you rather than simply giving advice. Your staff know the people they support better than anyone. Our role is to bring a psychological perspective, helping make sense of behaviours, identify patterns and develop practical strategies that everyone understands and can use consistently.

Do you provide training?+

Yes. We offer bespoke training designed around the needs of your organisation. Training can include topics such as attachment, trauma informed care, emotional regulation, behaviour support, communication, staff wellbeing, reflective practice and psychological formulation. Every session is interactive, practical and relevant to your service.

What is reflective practice?+

Reflective practice gives staff the opportunity to step back from the pressures of day to day work and think about the people they support, their own responses and the challenges they face. It is not about blame or criticism. It is about creating a space where staff can feel supported, develop psychologically informed thinking and build confidence in their practice.

Can you support us before an Ofsted inspection?+

Yes. We can help services strengthen psychologically informed practice, improve documentation, develop staff confidence and demonstrate the impact of their work. Rather than focusing solely on inspection, we aim to embed approaches that continue to benefit the service long after Ofsted has left.

How do we know which service we need?+

You don't need to know that before getting in touch. Some organisations contact us looking for training and realise consultancy would be more helpful. Others enquire about formulation and decide reflective practice would better meet their needs. We'll spend time understanding your service first before recommending the most appropriate support.

Can support be tailored to our organisation?+

Absolutely. No two organisations are the same, so we don't believe support should be either. Everything we provide is shaped around your needs, your staff, the people you support and the outcomes you're hoping to achieve.

How do we get started?+

It begins with a conversation. We'll take time to understand your organisation, the challenges you're facing and what you would like to achieve. From there, we'll discuss the options available and work with you to develop a package of support that fits your service, rather than expecting your service to fit a package.
